孟元老系徽宗朝宗室子弟赵子淔之化名,赵子淔以此名表示对赵氏王朝的忠诚。赵子淔还以幽兰居士自居,以示血统高贵。赵子淔随侍皇帝,参与修建“艮岳”等,故对大内制度十分熟悉,赵子淔以其宗室子弟身份游嬉市井,故对东京风土记录颇繁颇真。赵子淔具有较深的文学功力,又以“谈论”风格铺叙故都旧闻,创制《东京梦华录》这样独特的城市生活笔记。《枫窗小牍》则从另一方面揭示了赵子淔曾在《东京梦华录》叙述的许多场景,从而证实了百岁寓翁与孟元老同为化名并为赵子淔。
