FF车是前置发动机、前轮驱动的汽车,F是英文FRONT(前面的)字头;与其相对的是FR形式,即前置发功机、后轮驱动的汽车,其中R是英文REAR(后面的)字头。在FF车中,发动机有横置和纵置两种,横置的占多数。这是因为发动机横置可以缩小发动机所占的空间,扩大车身内利用面积。另外,由于可以减掉后传动轴和减速器,,这样就能减轻汽车自重,又可以把油箱配置在后坐席底下,货箱底板也可以下降,降低汽车的重心。
