The stimulation of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) with antigens or allogeneic cells can lead to the production of antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and the activation of natural cytotoxic (NC) cells. In addition, there are many lymphokines such as IL-2 , IFN-γ release. IFN-alpha production also occurs in virus-stimulated broth. Some studies show that IL-2 plays a key role in producing specific CTLs. IL-2, IFN-γ, and IFN-α, alone or in combination, potentiate NC activity in unstimulated PBLs. However, the role of these factors in CTL production and NC cell activation in stimulated cultures is poorly understood and it is not yet known exactly which cell-NK cells or LAK cells are produced
