李林甫严酷迫害谏官、御史,既使宪司重地遭到毁灭性打击、又诱发了被政治异化的阴森恐怖的文化空气。这对盛唐文学生态影响甚大:多位作家被杀,使盛唐文学少了一批创作的主力军;专权政治使正直之士皆容身保位、无复直言,呈现出集体怔忡症。盛唐前期的明媚诗风几乎音沉响绝,痛苦、无奈的悲苦之音应运而生;众多文人流落不偶,士人对盛世的期待变为对黑暗现实的批判,诗歌正视现实的趋势迅速扩大,逐渐成为天宝诗坛的主导风格。黑暗腐败的朝政,激起文人内心的愤懑,他们将一切生活中的失意、悲愤倾注到诗歌创作中,倒成全了一代文学。李林甫专权不仅仅是政治活动,足以构成一次文学史事件。
