Objective To investigate the changes and clinical significance of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with essential hypertension (EH). Methods Serum levels of sI-CAM-1 and CRP were measured in 76 patients with coronary heart disease by double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and 42 healthy controls were used as controls. Results The levels of sICAM-1 and CRP in patients with essential hypertension were significantly higher than those in controls (P <0.01), and increased with the severity of the disease (all P <0.01). The levels of sICAM-1 and CRP (P <0.01). Conclusions Serum levels of sICAM-1 and CRP are elevated in patients with essential hypertension, and sICAM-1 and CRP may be involved in the pathogenesis and development of hypertension.
