西昌县属于季风高原气候类型,夏秋季降雨量大,雨日多,暖温湿润;冬春降雨极少,地面蒸发强烈,干燥温暖,年温差较小,四季不明显,干旱季分明。年均温17.1℃,最热月均温22.7℃,最冷月均温9.5℃,年积温为5350℃,绝对最低温为-3.4℃;年降雨量1040毫米均集中于5—10月的雨季,年日照时数2421小时,土壤为酸性红壤。1977年起先后引种了北京杨、箭杆杨、沙兰杨。
