In the 1960s, narratology emerged under the influence of structuralist linguistics. With linguistic methods and text analysis as the foundation, it attempts to find out a set of patterns and laws for analyzing narrative texts, turning literary studies into a scientific, applied and highly technical subject. It is precisely because of its interpretative, highly applied features quickly became a significant study of literature. This article takes structuralist narratology as an example to discuss it, discusses its relationship with linguistics, and digs into the reasons behind the relationship, thus illustrating the inevitability of narratological research methods.
