民间美术作为民间文化的一种表现形态,与本民族的宗教信仰有极其密切的关系,是伴随民俗和宗教活动而发展的。宗教与神话往往是伴生的,白马藏族中的神灵同其他民族一样,具有超越自然的本领,传达出人们对特定神灵超自然神力的崇拜。受汉民族文化的影响,原本鲜见的偶像崇拜也逐渐被人们所认同,并将这些自然的神灵和祖先的偶像以绘画的形式展现在庙宇和厅堂之上,形成了一个地域特征鲜明、多民族信仰融合的民间宗教美术样式。
