Impact on Regional Economic Growth If the average exchange rate of the U.S. dollar against the Renminbi in each year is used to calculate the proportion of foreign investment in the three major regions equivalent to the GDP, there will be a big difference. Since the 1990s, the proportion of FDI and other investments in the eastern region equivalent to GDP has remained generally between 5% and 10%, the central region has generally remained between 1% and 2%, while the western region has not reached 1%. On average, the proportion of foreign investment in the eastern, central and western regions, equivalent to GDP, was 0.74%, 0.07% and 0.15% respectively from 1983 to 1987 and 2.03%, 0.25% and 0.24% respectively from 1988 to 1992, , 7.53%, 1.66% and 1.15% respectively from 1993 to 1999, and 5.61%, 1.43% and 0.74% respectively from 2000 to 2002. Since 2000, the proportion of foreign investment in each region equivalent to GDP has basically remained stable.
