I. INTRODUCTION The development of new memory technologies such as charge-coupled devices (CGDs), bubble memories, and electron beam memories has opened the way for the use of these computer components in future computer systems. These quasi-serial electronics, on the one hand, compete with random access memory (bipolar, MOS and core memory) and on the other hand compete with disk storage (fixed-head and removable-head). These technologies have significant common functionalities, and their use as computer memory will depend on the correct evaluation and use of these features by computer system designers. This article explores the possible applications of these memories in today’s and tomorrow’s computer systems. Detailed discussion and examples are limited to charge coupled devices and bubble shift registers.
