随着电产计算机的广泛应用,很多单位内务个部门都安装使用型号不同的计算机,它们必然需要组网互相联通,才能真正发挥作用,取得更大效果。这种计算机通信网属于本单位本身专用的通信网。如果这种专用通信网是限于企业或机关单位的一幢大楼内、一个中型工厂的厂区内、或一所学校的校园内,那么它们将称为局部区域网,简称局域网(LAN)。如果这种专用通信网是在一个大型工厂企业范围,占据跨街道的很大地区,就称为城市区域网,简称城域网(MAN)。此外,还有全国性企业,分支机构遍布全国各地,其专用通信网将称为广大区域网,简称广域网(WAN)。至于跨国企业,分支机构遍布全球,其专用通信网称为全球区域网,简称球区域网
