On December 13, 2004, CCTV’s “Focus Interview” program reported that Ningbo, Zhejiang Province and other places concentrated their efforts on the removal and destruction of a harmful alien species - Solidago canadensis. The appearance of this kind of plant caused a large area of orange trees in Feiyuetang, Ningbo, Wuhu Town, to be closed down. Canada Solidago is native to North America, and was introduced into China as an ornamental plant in 1935 and later escaped to the natural environment. After a long incubation period, the plant gradually adapted to the climate and geography of China’s Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces, and it has spread in recent years. According to researchers, it will compete for water, nutrients and sunlight from other crops during its growth. Studies have shown that in the same ecological forest, there are no more than 30 plant species covered by the Canadian Solidago invasion; in contrast to the densely growing Canadian Solidago, other plants have disappeared. Now that the Solidago canadensis has spread to many places in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, it even appears in Yunnan Province.
