Objective: To investigate the hypoglycemic effect of kelp polysaccharide on experimental type 2 diabetic mice and its possible mechanism. Methods: Sixty healthy Kunming mice were fed with high fat diet and alloxan was intraperitoneally injected to prepare type 2 diabetic animal model. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) was measured by automatic blood glucose meter. Insulin was detected by immunoelectrochemiluminescence assay. Serum amylin level was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The levels of FBG in high, medium and low dose groups were significantly lower than those in model group (P <0.05); the levels of serum insulin and amylin were significantly higher than those in model group (P <0.05) No significant difference between groups. Conclusion: Laminaria polysaccharide can promote the secretion of pancreatic islet cells in the early stage of type 2 diabetes, increase serum insulin and amylin, and exert hypoglycemic effect.
