After more than two years of competition, the U.S. Department of Defense announced on May 27, 2004 that Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics had been awarded a Phase I contract with the LCS Fligtlt. The two companies have each received 46 million U.S. dollars and 78 million U.S. dollars for the final system design of the future LCS. Under the contract, the U.S. Navy may also allow the two companies to build two prototype ships each in 2005-2009, with a total value of about 950 million U.S. dollars. The bidding of Raytheon company design is unluckily rejected. The selection of the Phase I design for the Littoral Combat Ship, Fligtlt, is an important milestone for the Littoral Combat Ship project. However, at the end of 2007, the U.S. Navy will eventually choose a team to continue its study of the Littoral Combat Ship project, so it can be said that the littoral combat ships are still undecided.
