7月15日,在欧盟26位成员国领导人的支持下,欧洲议会以422张赞成票,远超通过提名所需的376票,将前卢森堡首相、“欧元先生”让-克洛德·容克推上欧盟委员会主席这个欧盟最高职位。他将于今年11月1日履新,接替现任主席葡萄牙人巴罗佐,开始为期5年的主席任期。欧盟委员会不仅是欧盟的最高行政机构,同时也是唯一可以起草欧盟法律的部门。它可以监督成员国预算、实施欧盟法规和与第三国谈判签署贸易协定等重要工作,对欧盟在政治、经济、外交等重要政策制定上拥有重大影响力。
