轻四轮车是个日本名词,有轿车和载重车之分。以下将轻四轮载重车简称为轻四轮车。在日本官方统计中将载重车分成轻四轮车、小型车和普通车三级。轻四轮车的载重量在350公斤以内,小型车的载重量在350公斤以上、2吨以内,载重量2吨以上的是普通车。从1976年起日本将轻四轮车(又称微型载重汽车)的条件改为: 发动机排量在550cc以内,车全长在3200mm以内,车全宽在1400mm,车全高在2000mm以内。
