The workplace of the future - the equivalent of a “factory” - will be bright and inspiring where people desire to work, where people enjoy work, and work challenging and fulfilling. Thirty years ago, when U.S. automakers felt the threat of competition from Japan, they came up with the idea of defeating their competitors - “putting out the lights” and building a high-end automated factory with robot-built cars. However, this idea has not become a reality. Facts have proved that Japan’s competitive advantage is not automation, but rather people-oriented quality and lean manufacturing processes. However, “lights out” automation is still a dream
