以伯明翰当代文化研究中心为核心形成的伯明翰学派,运用葛兰西的文化霸权理论,从霸权危机的角度,深入分析了种族主义在英国的缘起及其引发的斗争。该学派认为,种族问题绝不是一个自然现象,而是一个交织着各种力量关系的不断建构的过程。种族主义是资本主义霸权危机的表征,是资本主义获得霸权、保持霸权的方式之一,对黑人的全面监控是资本主义种族问题的突出表现形式之一,而资本主义之所以能对黑人进行持续不断的监控,也源于全社会对黑人形象的常识建构。伯明翰学派的种族研究对后来的种族研究有着重要的启示意义。
The Birmingham School based on the Birmingham Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies uses Gramsci’s theory of cultural hegemony and analyzes in depth the origins and struggles of racism in the United Kingdom from the perspective of hegemony crisis. The school believes that the issue of race is by no means a natural phenomenon, but a continuously constructive process of interlacing relations among various forces. Racism is a manifestation of the crisis of capitalist hegemony, one of the ways that capitalism gains hegemony and maintains hegemony.
