Beryllium is one of the lightest metals. In 1879 the French chemist Walkley discovered beryllium when analyzing beryl. By 1928, chemists in Germany and France obtained a small amount of pure beryllium with low thermal purity by reducing the beryllium oxide by metallic calcium and by reducing the beryllium oxide by potassium potassium, respectively.
