加《医学邮报》第17卷第11期(1981年)报道美国亚特兰大消息:美国和芬兰的研究人员称,棉酚是棉籽的一种衍生物,在中国作为男用口服避孕药,将来在西方可能作为妇女用局部杀精子药。棉酚提取物具有较大的毒性。橡胶工业中用它作为一种抗氧化剂。中国的科学家报告说,毒性很轻微,而且服用者约10,000人以上,只有个别人出现低钾血症的无力。在使用者中,99.9％人的精子计数下降到4百万/毫升以下。全部用药者在停药3个月后,除少数外,都恢复了生育力。

The West may use topical spermicide as a woman. Gossypol extract has greater toxicity. It is used as an antioxidant in the rubber industry. Chinese scientists report that the toxicity is very mild and that there are more than 10,000 people taking care of them, and only a few people have hypokalemia.
