地名管理是社会行政管理的一项基础性工作。地名机构依据国家有关地名管理的方针、政策、法律、法规,对所辖区域的地名实施统一有效的规范化、标准化和信息化管理,为我国社会主义现代化建设和国内外交往及人们的日常生活提供便捷的公共服务,是地名规范化管理的主要目标和任务,实现地名的规范化管理,有利于维护国家领土主权和民族的尊严,有利于加强民族团结,有利于国家经济和社会发展,有利于国际交流合作,有利于社会交往和人们日常生活,有利于国防建设和社会治安,有利于推进中国特色社会主义文化建设。
