我国建筑界从五十年代中期到六十年代初,对建筑的内容和形式问题,曾展开过热烈的争鸣。对建筑内容,大体上有两种看法:一种认为建筑内容包括物质功能,精神功能和材料结构:一种认为建筑内容就是建筑的目的性,也就是物质功能和精神功能,材料结构是表现内容的手段。在争鸣中,后一种看法占主导地位,代表多数人的认识。究竟材料结构是建筑的内容,还是表现建筑内容的手段呢?现在看来,这两种看法都有片面性。
