中华民族是一个聪明智慧、富有科学精神的民族。崇尚知识,重视实践,勇于探索,求真求实,作为民族的一种优良传统,一直鼓舞着华夏儿女探索大自然的奥秘,揭示事物发展的本来面目,寻找世界万物的客观规律,从而创造了中国灿烂的古代文明和壮丽的古代科学技术成就。在中国古代科学技术发展史上,明朝特别是其后期,是科学技术发展群星灿烂的时代,这一历史时期的科技成果在宋元的基础上有了长足的进步。明代的文化成就首推医药学,出现了闻名世界的医药学巨著——李时珍的《本草纲目》。此外,徐光启、徐霞客、宋应星写的有关农学、地理学、工艺学的专著,也是这一时期科技成果的珍贵结晶。本篇辑录的有关李时珍和徐霞客的资料,从一个侧面,表现了中华儿女的聪明才智和中华民族勇于探索的科学精神。
