In this paper, qualitative conversational analysis and quantitative corpus linguistics are used to describe the function of you know and I mean in the academic discourse of learners of GM language learners. The data used are sub-libraries of English as a General Language Corpus (ELFA) in academic environment. The results of this study not only further demonstrate the versatility of discourse markers, but also show that you know and I mean play a special role as discourse markers in cross-cultural academic research. Due to the often controversial terminology used in cross-cultural academic communication, English as a learner of universal language will use you know to clarify its discourse or to correct its prior expression and fluent language with I mean. This study finds that it is helpful for English as a conversational speaker to understand the pragmatic functions of discourse markers you know and I mean in intercultural academic communication and to guide the conversants to use these two discourse markers appropriately for effective academic exchange.
