根据文献记载,“怱怱不暇草书”本是张芝信中的谦辞。卫恒《四体书势》借用这句话来赞颂张芝草书。赵壹《非草书》有“适迫遽,故不及草”一语,与“怱怱不暇草书”意思相同。以往研究者虽然对“怱怱不暇草书”的涵义有很多解读,但都没能同时贯通三个语境的语义。本文认为,“怱怱不暇草书”本义是信写得匆遽而无法顾及草书书法,然而张芝号称“怱怱不暇草书”写出来的草书却展现出了极高的艺术水平,因此卫恒用这句话赞颂张芝草书随意自然。赵壹《非草书》则认为草书本来就是在匆遽的情况下使用的,根本就不存在匆遽而顾不上的问题,并借此批评年轻人沉迷于草书而不顾国家大事。
