“礼仪之争”是中国基督教史上一个十分重要的事件,它不仅对基督教在中国的命运有很大影响,也激发了西方对中国社会和文化的进一步认识。对这场争论进行溯源,可以看到资本主义扩张、宗教改革、政教关系等等因素的作用,但贯穿始终的是中西方这两种本位主义文化背后潜在的观念冲突。冲突既存在于西方传教士与中国士大夫之间,也各自存在于西方传教士之间和中国士大夫之间,而且自传教之初就已经存在,在其他的因素的作用下一步一步彰显出来,直至最终激烈的争论的爆发。
