在美国戏剧界,一部戏剧的演出成功,大都归功于演员、舞台监督和剧作家,而对于导演却很少提及。相反,如果一个剧作家的作品或者演员表演失败了,这时过错却归罪于导演了。正如批评家最爱用的评语所说的导演未能使这部戏发挥作用。这当然是不公平的。人们对戏剧导演的作用不很了解,在一般人看来导演是袖手旁观,什么也不干,而只让演员们自放异彩。有的人错误地认为导演是在幕后游荡的一个幽灵,好象是魔术师一样,又好象是治百病的医生,只要变换魔术就能使演员在台
In the American theater industry, the success of a theater’s performance has been attributed to actors, stage supervisors and dramatists, but seldom mentioned for directors. On the contrary, if a dramatist’s work or performers fails, the fault is attributed to the director. As the critic’s favorite comment says, the director failed to make the play work. This is of course not fair. People do not know much about the role of theatrical director. To most people, the director is on the sidelines, doing nothing, leaving only the actors to make a difference.
