卫星移动通信具有机动性强、覆盖范围大、可靠性好、传输效率高等特点,是保障作战行动的有效通信方式。自英阿马岛战争后,卫星移动通信技术和系统广泛应用于“精选力量”、“持久自由”、“伊拉克自由”等历次军事行动中,其应用环境遍及山地、沙漠、盆地、丛林、城市等各种恶劣和复杂的作战地区,应用范围贯穿于战役、战术等各种规模的作战之中,应用对象包括多种作战平台、师旅团营甚至单兵等各级作战单位和单元。在作战应用的实践过程中,卫星移动通信技术与军事需求紧密联系、不断完善,成为确保战场指挥控制、通信互联的重要手段。
