杜牧说:“凡为文以意为主,以气为辅,以辞采章句为之兵卫。”“意在笔先,故得举正闲暇。”杜牧所说的“意”指的应该是文章的主题,他的观点中的“主”和“先”应该说在写作一篇作文时对文章主题的思考是第一要素,是应该优先考虑的。而“主题”有新颖和陈旧、深刻与浅薄、高雅与俗气、雄奇与平淡之分。即这里的“主”和“先”必须要新,然后再去考虑文章的结构、语言等其他要素。学生写作中怎样去追求主题的创新呢?
