为了提高军用及商用飞机的燃料效率和满足其性能要求,人们一直在研制各种新的材料系,挖潜的主要方面是减轻飞机结构重量。虽然新材料系,如有机基体复合材料,能大大减轻飞机结构重量,但也存在着一些问题,如研制费用高等。用铝-锂合金直接代替现在使用的材料可直接减轻重量,当用在新的飞机设计中时,重量减轻得就更多。据说这些重量的减轻已达到了复合结构的要求,而无需采用新的加工工艺
