涂鸦艺术在纽约经历了一个戏剧性的发展过程。早在20世纪60年代,涂鸦艺术就经历了一段相当长的地下和民间活动时期。约在所谓多元主义的七十年代后半期,现代主义绘画的主流失去其原有的猛锐冲击,美术界弥漫着混乱和怀疑,年轻一代的艺术家(多半来自哈林区,布鲁克林区和布郎克斯区)逐渐伴着新潮音乐和舞蹈出没于曼哈顿的下城区,涂鸦绘画在纽约街头大量出现了。
Graffiti art in New York experienced a dramatic development process. As early as the 1960s, graffiti art went through quite a long period of underground and civil activities. Around the so-called pluralism of the late seventies, the mainstream of modernist painting lost its original fierce impact, the art world filled with chaos and suspicion, the younger generation of artists (mostly from Harlem, Brooklyn and Brown Kes district) gradually accompanied by trendy music and dance in downtown Manhattan, graffiti painting in New York on the streets a lot.
