有这样一副对联:西席桃李满桑梓,东坦龙蛇尽楷模。这副对联只有十四个字,却巧妙地运用了六个典故,对仗工整,音韵和谐,语意丰赡,饶有情趣。西席:尊称老师。汉明帝刘庄当太子时拜桓荣为老师,登上皇位后,对桓荣仍十分尊敬。他常常到桓荣住的太常府内,请桓荣坐向东的位子。因为汉代室内的座次以“西席”(面向东方)为最尊。后来人们就把家庭教师,甚至所有的老师都尊称为“西席”。桃李:喻指学生。典出《韩诗外传》卷七:“夫春树桃李,夏得阴其下,秋得食其
