【Objective】 To understand the influence of abnormal glucose metabolism during pregnancy on the structure and function of neonatal heart. 【Methods】 Newborns from 23 diabetic mothers, 16 newborns with impaired glucose tolerance and 30 normal glucose-fed mothers were examined by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography within 4 days of age. The newborns of diabetic mothers , Newborn infants with impaired glucose tolerance and mothers with normal glucose levels. 【Results】 The interventricular septum thickness and left ventricular weight were significantly higher in mothers with diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance than neonates with normal blood glucose (P <0.05). Left ventricular diastolic function was attenuated (P <0.05). 【Conclusion】 Abnormal blood glucose during pregnancy may have a significant impact on the neonatal heart. Monitoring blood glucose during the first trimester is important for reducing heart damage in infants.
