This paper briefly summarizes the research methods on the time series of partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the sea surface. The time series study focuses on the determination of pCO2 control process, the revelation of pCO2, the monitoring of the impact of climatic events on pCO2 and the estimation of sea-gas carbon dioxide ) Flux and other aspects of research progress. The research methods of pCO2 time series in the sea surface can be roughly divided into two categories, one is based on ship survey and the other is buoy-based CO2 automatic determination. In addition to being able to qualitatively record and track the effects of some special and accidental physical and biological processes on pCO2, time series studies can also quantitatively give the contribution of various processes to changes in pCO2, which is important for revealing the control mechanism of marine pCO2 significance. Time series observations at the interannual scale show that human activities have resulted in an increase of pCO2 in the sea surface, and that the El Niño and La Niña events have a significant effect on pCO2 and sea-air CO2 fluxes in the sea surface. In addition, time series studies can improve the accuracy of sea-gas CO2 flux estimates.
