威廉斯堡开始集中出现艺术家是1999年前后的事,那年曼哈顿因为商业开发,房价上涨过快,原先住在苏荷和两村(西村与格林威治村)几个社区的艺术家们被迫搬到东河对岸的威廉斯堡。10多年后,这个小镇能成为曼哈顿以外纽约最贵的社区,有些地方甚至已贵过曼哈顿,可见那时候完全不谙“跟着艺术家走准没错”之道。但现在威廉斯堡的艺术家已所剩不多。发展成熟的小镇房价一路飙升,早己不是一般艺术家所能承受的了。这倒也不是多么出人意料的事。世界上任何被艺术家开发出来的社区一旦成熟——成熟的标志很多,
