民间性是民间木版年画和其它艺术门类最大的区别。它主要是民众自发的行为,或者说是民众精英们为生计而产生的自发行为,是带有较强的实用目的和商业目的的,这在民间木版年画的销售与传播上的表现尤为突出。民间木版年画需要被我们重新认识,重新解构,不仅是因为它的特殊性被列入国家文化遗产;更重要的是它的自身承载着以“民”为主要对象的“民”的社会生活、生产和发展变迁的信息。
