对于中小学数学教学来说,数学能力是重要的教学目标之一,历来的数学教学大纲的教学目的和数学课程标准的课程目标对此都有明确的表述。不过,一方面由于教学参考资料的需要,这种表述十分简洁而概括,免不了有产生歧义的可能;另一方面,这一表述是一种结论性陈述,并不是而且也不可能对数学能力进行全面的分析。因此无论对于教学目标的落实还是教学目标的研究都需要对数学能力的概念做进一步的解析,这一直是数学教育教学领域的重要研究课
