The Dangling Man is a work by American writer Saul Bellow in 1944, whose diary is narrated as a diary. The story adopts the anti-traditional way of writing to depict unemployed Joseph (protagonist) to quit his job as a member of the military. At home, he waits aimlessly for the army’s recruitment notice. Joseph walked through the city, including rooms, streets, and other spaces dominated by urban landscapes. During his wanderings, he became more and more aware of the freedom that he suffered, bored, emptiness. With Joseph as a microcosm, Saul Bellow vividly captures the historical burdens of the Jews imprisoned in modern cities with their suspended mental state.
