The sonar buoy reference system (SRS) described in this article is a new technique of anti-submarine warfare. The system has been installed on the Navy’s S-3A, P-3C aircraft for precision electronic positioning of enemy submarines. The SRS system was able to show its own position relative to the sonobuoys, with several sonobuoys in the sea in suspected submarines. According to the phase-contrast technique, the system determines the angle between the aircraft and the sonobuoy, by measuring the phase difference between the same signal and the two antennas. The slant is determined by measuring the phase delay of the signal transmitted by the aircraft and then forwarded by the sonobuoy to the aircraft. Self-calibration, data processing (including Kalman filtering) and other applications of the system will also be covered in this article.
