近代“新学”以其独特的体用结构,形成了一种既有别于传统旧学,也有别于西学的文化模式。近代新学特有的构成因素和体用结构,规定了它文化模式上的独特性。这是旧学和西学都不具备的特征。中西学术文化绾接于“中体西用”的命题之中,并从观念形态上完成了中学由旧学到新学的转变;戊戌变法之后,风行于世的“新学”浸及社会各个层面,成为新学制取代旧学制的理论依据和舆论工具,并在“中体西用”的模式中完成了新旧之间的学制转型。
