(Death Val-
I. INTRODUCTION Sheppard and Gude (1968) identified sepiolite in shale fragments of less than 2 μm in the Pleistocene Lake Tecopa. They conclude that sepiolite is spontaneous, while other clay minerals are detritus, and they also suggest further sampling to determine the distribution of sepiolite and its relationship to other clay minerals. The authors collected 158 samples of clay in Lake Tekapo, with only 43 samples containing sepiolite. This article only covers those samples containing sepiolite, regardless of their content. The Pleistocene Lake Tekapo, about 23 kilometers long and 18 kilometers wide, is located in the Mojave Desert, in Death Valley, southeastern Inyo County, California.
