In order to observe the dynamic changes of plasma vasoactive intestinal peptide and iris-active substance (ir-SP) content in neonatal rats after hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIE) at different time, The rats were randomly divided into normal control group (C), sham-operation group (B) and HIE group (A). One side of common carotid artery ligation and hypoxia inhalation were used to form HIE. Radioimmunoassay Dynamic changes of plasma ir-VIP and ir-SP levels at 48 and 72 hours. The levels of ir-SP in group A1, A2 and A3 were significantly lower than those in groups B1, B2 and B3, respectively. The level of ir-SP in group A2, A3 and A4 were significantly higher than those in groups B2, B3 and B4 respectively. The difference of ir-VIP and ir-SP between group B and group C was insignificant. It was confirmed that VIP and SP were involved in the pathophysiological process of HIE. The significant change of plasma content suggested that VIP and SP play a role in HIE.
