六安市位于安徽省西部,俗称皖西。2000年3月撤地设市。现辖5县4区,总面积1.8万平方公里,居全省第二,人口665万。六安是一块红色的土地,被称为“红军的故乡,将军的摇篮”。1923年,寿县小甸集成立中国共产党特别支部,是安徽建立最早的党组织。1929年,爆发了立夏节起义和六霍起义,诞生了红十一军三十二、二十三师,走出了洪学智、皮定钧等108位开国将军。在革命战争年代,30万皖西儿女投身革命、为国捐躯。六安市区距合肥空港70公里。境内有312、206、105国道和合(肥)九(江)、宁(南京)西(安)铁路。正在兴建的宁西高速、商(丘)景(德镇)高速,以及规划中的合(肥)武(汉)高速公路、合(肥)阜(阳)高速公路和沪(上海)汉(武汉)蓉(成都)高速铁路在境内交汇,六安将成为东西部过渡带上重要的交通枢纽。六安境内有国家AAA级湖泊型旅游风景名胜区万佛湖、森林公园天堂寨、历史文化名城寿春、世界七大人工灌区之一淠史杭水利枢纽工程和被称为“神州第一塘”的寿县安丰塘,旅游资源十分丰富。境内已探明的矿藏有铁、金、铅、花岗石等25种,其中霍邱周集铁矿储量居全国第五,华东第一,已经开采。
