Material material in the artistic creation of what position? This is the western aesthetic one of the fundamental propositions. Since the Renaissance, in discussing the relationship between matter and form, matter has generally been considered as playing a tricky role for artists. Since the middle of the 20th century, there has been a material “return” phenomenon in the fields of art creation, art criticism and art history. The materiality of art has been highlighted and emphasized. By analyzing the works of some important artists and art historians in the second half of the 20th century, this article attempts to restore the awareness and pursuit of different issues behind this “materialistic trend” in the study and creation of contemporary art. Among them, the focus of this article is “The Basswood Sculptor of the German Renaissance” by the art historian Baksondel, in particular showing the complex relationship between the material material, the making and the viewing, and the related description of the art.
