参加现代第一届夏季奥运会男子400米跑的选手共11人,分两组进行预赛;各组的前两名参加决赛。德国选手霍夫曼在预赛中抢跑.则被罚后退两米。他第二次起跑成功了,一开始就加速,弥补了因多跑两米造成的损失;但却使他多消耗了体力。他不得不跟住美国选手杰米逊,保住了小组第二名,当他跑到终点时,几乎垮了下来。次日,进行决赛时,霍夫曼在距终点100米处时仍然领先,但是另两名美国选手的后劲很足,最后都超过了他。美国选手伯克以54秒2的成绩夺得冠军,杰尔逊获第二名,而霍夫曼列第三名。
A total of 11 athletes participated in the 400m men’s race of the first modern summer Olympic Games in two groups. The top two of each group participated in the finals. German player Hoffman snatched the heat in the preliminary round and was sent back two meters. His second start was successful, accelerating from the start, making up for the loss of more than two meters and causing him more physical exertion. He had to keep up with American Jamie Johnson and held the team second place, almost collapsing when he reached the finish line. The next day, Hoffman still led the race 100 meters from the finish line, but the rest of the two Americans were hard-pressed to surpass him at the end.
