在我国国民经济中大量使用着汽油机。按用途分,有下列几种用途: (1)车用——装置于汽车、摩托车上,是使用最多的; (2)通用(General Purpose)——通常指并非专门为一种机械配套专用的,可以多种配套。如发电机组、水泵、农机农具、便携式动力……等等。有时也将某些专用配套包括进去。如汽油锯(Chain Saw)。这类汽油机一般功率较小,由小于1kW到22kW(30马力)或30kW之间,所以也称为通用小型汽油机(Small Gasoline Engine for General Purpose);
