甘罗,战国末楚国下蔡(今安徽凤台)人。他的祖父甘茂,是战国时期的一名杰出人物,曾担任泰国丞相多年。出生在这样的显宦之家,自幼便受到了良好的教育。加上他天分极高,颖慧过人,机智伶俐,巧言善辩;虽然年纪不大,却已名闻各诸侯之国。不久,祖父甘茂遭到排挤,被迫逃离秦国,并客死于魏国。甘罗刚刚12岁时,便接受秦国丞相、文信侯吕不韦的邀请,成为他的家臣。
