A paucity of data exists concerning t he normal glycemic pro -file in nondiabetic pregnancie s.Using a novel ap-proach that provides continuous mea surement of blood glucose,we sought to evaluate the am bulatory dailyglycemic profile in the second half o f pregnancy in nondi-abetic women.Fifty -seven obese and normal weight nondiabetic subjects were evaluate d for 72consecutive hours with continuous glucose monitoring by measurement interstitial glucose levels in subcutaneous tissue every 5minutes.Subjects were instructed n ot to modify their lifestyle or to follow any dietary re striction.For each woman,mean and fasting blood glucose values were de-termined;for each meal during the study period,the first180minutes were analyzed.For the study group,the fasting blood glucose level was 75±12mg /dL;the mean blood glucose level was 83.7±18mg /d L;the post-prandial peak glucose value level wa s 110±16mg /dL,and the time interval that was needed to reach peak post-prandial glucose level was 70±13min utes.A similar postprandial glycemic profilewas o btained for breakfast,lunch,and dinner.Obese women were c haracterized by a significantly higher postprandial glucose peak value,in-creased 1-and 2-hour postprandial g lucose levels,in-creased time interval for glucose peak,and significantly lower mean blood glucose during the n ight.No difference was found in fasting and mean blood glucose between obese and nonobese subjects.Glycemic pro file characterization in both obese and normal weight nondiab etic subjects provide a measure for the desired level of gly cemic control in pregnancy that is complicated with d iabetes mellitus.
