Introduction The structure of the arch dam during lateral earthquakes is complex. Due to the unaddressed analysis of the past, there has been controversy over whether this type of dam can withstand lateral earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to provide a suitable analytical method to solve this problem. The water retaining surface of the arch dam is a series of arcuate cylinders that support the nearly triangular dam. The structure of the dam is equal to a triangular plate (Figure 1a) when subjected to lateral earthquakes. The upstream edge of this plate is connected to the arch of the plate is equivalent to a flexible
