例1的句意为:“晚于预定时间五分钟到达诊所在西方国家是普遍做法。” normal意为“正常的,标准的”,可以首先排除;而common,ordinary,usual都可以表示“普遍的,常见的,普通的”,如何分辨呢?
common侧重表示“(在数量上)常见的,人所共有的,在多处发生的”,它所修饰的事物可以是哪里都看得见的、满大街都是的。如:

It’s usual for us to see him crying naked. 对我们来说,看到他光着身子大哭是很平常的。
因此,例1中应选择common,表示这样做的人很多,在西方国家是常见的。
